Progressive metal trailblazers CYNIC have officially parted ways with drummer Matt Lynch. He was featured behind the kit for the band’s performance on May 24 at the Maryland Deathfest, where they played their entire debut album, 1993’s “Focus”. Filling in for him was Michel Bélanger from GORGUTS.
Lynch joined CYNIC in 2015 and contributed to the band’s most recent album, 2021’s “Ascension Codes”, as well as the 2018 single “Humanoid”.
This morning, CYNIC shared a message on social media: “After a significant chapter together, we’ve decided to part ways with Matt Lynch. We are grateful for the time and music shared and wish Matt all the best in his future endeavors.”
In 2023, CYNIC commemorated the 30th anniversary of “Focus” by performing the album in its entirety during a special headlining tour across North America, while also honoring the late drummer Sean Reinert and bassist Sean Malone.
The year 2020 will be remembered as a profoundly challenging time for people worldwide. For the CYNIC community, the difficulties extended beyond the pandemic. The unexpected deaths of drummer Sean Reinert in January at age 48, and bassist Sean Malone in December at age 50, overshadowed the band’s immediate concerns and were deeply shocking.
Reinert, who was a founding member of CYNIC since its inception in 1988, left a considerable mark on countless young drummers. His contributions to “Focus” and DEATH‘s landmark 1991 album “Human” showcased his ability to blend extreme technical metal with a jazz fusion-inspired style. This innovative approach to drumming and metal had largely been influenced by Reinert. Although he departed from CYNIC in 2015, his impact remains evident.
The loss of Sean Malone added another tragic chapter to CYNIC‘s 2020. Over his many years with the band, Malone‘s exceptional musicianship harmonized seamlessly with Reinert‘s. Together, they established a powerful core of rhythmic agility that propelled CYNIC‘s artistic ambitions.
