Pearl Jam performed a cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s ‘My City of Ruins’ following Donald Trump’s social media attacks against him.

The Seattle band is currently extending their ‘Dark Matter’ world tour, having performed in Pittsburgh on Friday (May 16).
During the encore, which generally opens with solo acoustic tracks from Eddie Vedder, he started playing a slowed-down version of Springsteen’s 2002 classic.
While Vedder didn’t explicitly reference Springsteen’s ongoing dispute with Trump, audience members quickly perceived the performance as a gesture of support, chanting “Bruuuuuuce!” at the conclusion of the song.

This comes as Springsteen employs the track during his current tour to introduce political speeches criticizing the sitting US president. Kicking off the UK leg in Manchester earlier this week, he condemned Trump’s actions and his administration’s “corruption” and “incompetence.”
“In America, they are targeting individuals for exercising their right to free speech and expressing their dissent. This is happening now. The wealthiest in America take comfort in neglecting the world’s poorest children, leaving them to face sickness and death. This is happening now.”
In response, Trump lashed out at the artist online, claiming he “never liked” Springsteen’s music and branding him “dumb as a rock” and a “dried out ‘prune’ of a rocker.”
The President stated: “I see that Highly Overrated Bruce Springsteen goes to a Foreign Country to speak poorly of the President of the United States. Never liked him or his music, nor his Radical Left Politics. Importantly, he’s not a talented guy — just a pushy, obnoxious JERK.”
Following this, The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) released a statement defending Springsteen and Taylor Swift, who also faced Trump’s criticism this week.
“[We] will not remain silent as two of our members—Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift—are targeted and personally attacked by the President of the United States,” said AFM President Tino Gagliardi. “Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift are not only exceptional musicians but also role models and inspirations to millions worldwide.”
Springsteen has consistently criticized Donald Trump. He publicly endorsed Kamala Harris in the presidential election last November and performed at one of her rallies, previously labeling Trump as “mentally ill.”
Additionally, he began a show shortly after the election with a “fighting prayer” for the United States following Donald Trump‘s victory.
