Former SEPULTURA and current CAVALERA drummer Igor “Iggor” Cavalera recently collaborated with U.K.’s Earth House for an innovative performance that blended electronics, synths, drones, and, naturally, drums. A video of this performance, created and directed by Ali White, is available below.
In a recent discussion with Drumtalk, a video podcast hosted by German drummer and videographer Philipp Koch, Igor was queried about his perspective on success. He shared: “In my view, success is being able to engage in something you love for an extended period. It’s reaching a level where you feel comfortable with your work and don’t compromise your integrity as a musician and drummer just to chase money. For me, success isn’t about owning a golden Ferrari or a limo; it’s about doing something you are passionate about and sustaining that passion for many years. That’s the message I want to impart to my children. Regardless of the field, whether it’s coding or anything else, if you have passion and joy in what you do over time, you’re successful. It doesn’t equate to wealth or being a millionaire; it simply means you’re successful within yourself. That’s how I gauge things.”
This past February, Igor kicked off a solo tour across the United Kingdom, showcasing electronic pieces from his solo discography influenced by various avant-garde, drone, industrial, and harsh noise subgenres.
Alongside his older brother Max Cavalera, Igor co-founded the Brazilian thrash metal band SEPULTURA. Today, Igor plays drums for CAVALERA, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SOULWAX, PETBRICK, among others. He is also half of the DJ duo MIXHELL, an electronic project he started with his wife, Laima Leyton, in 2006, performing globally at festivals like Glastonbury, Bestival, and Reading.
After relocating to London in 2013, Igor joined the Belgian band SOULWAX in 2016, recording drums for their album “From Deewee” and partaking in the “Transient Program For Drums And Machinery” tour. Shortly thereafter, he started PETBRICK with Wayne Adams, a project that merges noise with heavy electronics and intense drumming.
Igor has been performing live using analog modular equipment, drum pads, and visuals for intimate gatherings at experimental festivals like Dio Drone (Florence) and venues such as Cafe Oto and Iklectik (London). His most recent releases are “Aural Manifestations” on Damian Records in the U.S. and Deepthroat Records in Europe, along with “Alucinações Sônicas” on Hospital Productions.
Igor departed SEPULTURA in June 2006 over “artistic differences.” His exit came five months after he announced a break from touring to spend time with his second wife and their newborn son (born January 2006).
In 1996, Max Cavalera left SEPULTURA after the band split with Max‘s wife Gloria, who managed them.
