Shane Hawkins, the 18-year-old son of late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, made an appearance at a Drum Clinic in Newquay, England, on Thursday. During the event, he revealed to the audience that his father’s preferred Foo Fighters song to perform live wasn’t “Aurora,” as many believe, but rather “Low” from the 2002 album One by One.
“People often claim that ‘Aurora’ was his favorite to play,” Shane Hawkins stated. “That’s untrue. Dave [Grohl] didn’t allow him to play it much… he did let him perform it a couple of times, but it’s a really tough one to get right as a group. I think Dave was probably like, ‘forget that,’ or something to that effect. That’s just my opinion. If I were a guitarist, that’s what I’d do. The Foo Fighters have played “Low” 125 times, with their most recent performance being at the tribute concert for Taylor Hawkins in Los Angeles in September 2022. The last live rendition featuring Hawkins took place on August 26, 2018, at the Hollywood Palladium Parking Lot when they called themselves the Holy Shits as part of a free pop-up event. In contrast, “Aurora” has been performed 284 times, with the last performance alongside Taylor occurring on March 15, 2022, at Foro Sol in Mexico City. He passed away just 10 days later.
Taylor Hawkins was initially succeeded by seasoned drummer Josh Freese in the Foo Fighters, but they parted ways with him last month without providing a reason. “In my 40 years of professional drumming, I’ve never been dismissed from a band,” Freese shared on Instagram, “so while I’m not angry – I’m just a bit stunned and disappointed. However, as many of you know, I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands, so I’m okay.”
The Foo Fighters have not yet announced who will fill the drummer position when they embark on their October tour in Indonesia, Singapore, and Japan. Speculation is running high that Shane Hawkins may be considered for the role, but there’s no solid confirmation at this stage.
Nevertheless, Shane Hawkins has been performing in his father’s spot in his long-standing side project, Chevy Metal. A new version of the band featuring Shane will launch a short tour starting on July 19 in Denver, Colorado, concluding on August 31 in Agoura Hills, California. This gives him ample time to prepare for the Foo Fighters tour, but we might not know who will officially take the role until they step on stage in Jakarta on October 2.
